Two Types of Dodgeball, Two Very Different Experiences
If you played dodgeball in school, you almost certainly remember hard rubber balls — the kind that sting on impact and leave red marks on your arms. Modern competitive dodgeball has moved on. The World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF) uses foam balls as the official standard, and once you try them, you will understand why.
Safety First
The biggest difference is safety. Foam dodgeballs are soft, lightweight, and designed to absorb impact. Getting hit simply does not hurt. This makes the sport genuinely accessible to all ages and fitness levels — from teenagers to adults in their fifties. Rubber balls, by contrast, can cause bruising and discourage less confident players from fully engaging in the game.
Grip and Throwing Technique
Foam balls have a very different texture from rubber. They are slightly larger and softer, which means you cannot grip them the same way. This changes the throwing mechanics entirely. Players rely more on wrist snap, spin, and placement rather than raw power. The result is a more skilful, tactical game where accuracy and timing beat brute force.
Playing Style
Rubber ball dodgeball tends to reward hard, fast throws. Foam ball dodgeball rewards strategy. Because the balls are lighter, they are easier to catch — which means every throw carries real risk. Players have to think before they throw: is the opponent watching? Can I disguise my target? Should I hold the ball and wait for a better moment? This cat-and-mouse dynamic is what makes foam dodgeball so addictive.
Why Gron's Chose Foam
At Gron's Dodgeball, we exclusively use foam balls for several reasons:
- Inclusivity — new players are not intimidated by painful impacts, so they join in from the very first throw.
- WDBF compliance — our sessions follow the same standards used at international tournaments, so what you learn with us translates directly to competitive play.
- Better gameplay — foam balls create faster, more dynamic rallies and more spectacular catches.
- Suitable for events — whether it is a team building clinic, a birthday party, or a casual pick-up session, foam balls keep everyone safe and smiling.
Still curious? Come to one of our sessions and feel the difference for yourself. Once you play with foam, you will never want to go back to rubber.
