A Sport With Deep Roots and a Modern Twist
Dodgeball has been around in one form or another for centuries. What started as an informal playground game has evolved into a competitive, internationally regulated sport with national leagues, world championships, and a rapidly growing community. The modern version of the game is governed by the World Dodgeball Federation (WDBF), which standardises rules, equipment, and tournament formats across the globe.
How Is Dodgeball Played?
A dodgeball match pits two teams against each other on an indoor court. Each team typically consists of six players on the court at the same time. At the start of each set, foam balls are lined up along the centre line. On the whistle, players sprint to grab the balls — this is called the rush.
The objective is simple: eliminate all players on the opposing team by hitting them with a ball below the shoulders. If a player is hit, they are out. However, if the targeted player catches the ball before it touches the ground, the thrower is eliminated instead, and one of the catcher's eliminated teammates returns to the court. This catch mechanic makes every throw a calculated risk and keeps games exciting until the very last second.
Basic WDBF Rules at a Glance
- Hit below the shoulders — a headshot does not count, and the thrower may be penalised.
- Catch = thrower out — plus one teammate returns to play.
- Boundaries matter — stepping outside the court line means you are out.
- No holding the ball too long — you have a limited time to throw to keep the game fast-paced.
- Foam balls only — official WDBF games use soft foam balls for safety and consistency.
Foam vs Rubber Balls
If you remember dodgeball from school, you probably picture hard rubber balls. Modern competitive dodgeball uses foam balls that are lighter, softer, and much safer. They still fly fast, but getting hit does not hurt — making the sport accessible for all ages and fitness levels.
Not Your School Gym Class
In the Netherlands, many people know trefbal — the schoolyard version where one unlucky kid stands in the middle and everyone throws at them. Competitive dodgeball is nothing like that. It is a team sport built on communication, strategy, and athleticism. Players coordinate attacks, set up screens, and use deception to outplay their opponents. The pace is relentless, games are short, and every player on the team matters.
Why Is Dodgeball Growing?
